Market Square
A small square where the harbor’s daily needs change hands.
Market Square forms a paved wedge between the southern quay and the Gilded Mooring. No grand hall stands there. Instead, fixed awnings lean against the nearby buildings, and traders unfold their tables as the harbor wakes before carts and handbarrows take the square again at midday.
Stalls trade in the things households need, from fresh inlet fish and upriver beans to lamp oil, salt, rope, needles, and soap. Dock crews bring most goods up from the quay each morning. The goods look ordinary, but the sellers speak many languages, so a greeting, a shouted price, or a handwritten label may arrive in a tongue that the next customer does not know. Buyers bargain with fragments of shared speech, gestures, and patience.
A new ship sometimes leaves unfamiliar goods in the square. It may bring a spice or a carved charm. It may also bring an unusual tool or food that no local cook knows how to use. Such goods never turn the market into a grand affair, but they remind the town how far sea and river trade can reach.
The Wayfarer’s Measure opens onto the northern side of the square, while the notice board stands beneath the old quay wall near the tavern steps.
