West of Babel

The Gilded Mooring / Persons

Selvar Venn

Retired trader and proprietor of the Gilded Mooring.

Selvar Venn runs the Gilded Mooring with silver at his temples, ink on his fingers, and a careful eye on every door in the common room. He spent three decades as a trader between river markets, mountain settlements, and ports beyond the western headlands before deciding that Port of Asgoth was a good place to stop moving.

He speaks several languages with the ease of someone who learned them by bargaining, apologizing, and finding shelter in unfamiliar places. Selvar is generous with practical advice, quick to laugh at his own bad luck, and reluctant to tell the same story twice. The stories he does tell involve stubborn captains, impossible customs officers, misplaced cargo, and improbable meals.

At the table

Selvar is a useful first contact for adventurers. He knows who has arrived in town, which roads are passable, what the harbor gossip says, and when a traveler is pretending not to need help. In return, he appreciates clear accounts, timely payment, and people who do not start fights near the stove.
